On a sunny May 20th at Toronto’s Duke of Westminster, ECC members new and old were treated to an Atlantic Canadian original: Sons of Maxwell musician and internet sensation Dave Carroll. Speaking at ECC’s Coast and Cocktails as part of his tour of Canada, Carroll entertained the crowd with his “United Breaks Guitars” experience, explaining how his life has changed since then, and then performing several songs, much to the pleasure of the crowd. More than 300 Atlantic Canadians, expats, friends and colleagues gathered at the National Arts Centre for the official launch of ECC Ottawa, East Coast Connected’s newest chapter. As a steady flow of people filled the room, traditional Cape Breton session music provided the backdrop for politicians, public servants and young professionals to network and reconnect with their East Coast roots. Brain drain is a well known phenomenon. Individuals from Atlantic Canada are drawn to major economic centres, like Toronto, in pursuit of higher salaries and advanced career opportunities. Atlantic Canadians who have moved away still represent a valuable resource to the Atlantic Provinces. Instead of brain drain, East Coast Connected (ECC) will promote brain circulation - allowing both Atlantic Canada and Toronto to benefit from the best of what each region has to offer through the free flow of capital, knowledge and creativity. Atlantic Business Summit Diary 2: Kevin Stolarick and the Future Prosperity of Atlantic Canada

The 2010 Atlantic Business Summit was the site of some open and frank discussion about the employment and economic outlook for the East Coast. At the centre of those discussions was Kevin Stolarick, Research Director of the Martin Prosperity Institute. His opening keynote address, “The Future Prosperity of Atlantic Canada,” was a wide-ranging and candid conversation. Prince Edward Island tourism officials hoping for big gains may experience just that after New York Based Live! with Regis and Kelly taped four shows from Charlottetown Monday and Tuesday. With the help of local and international media attention, PEI became Google’s second most popular search topic in the US as a result of the tapings and the Charlottetown broadcasts have been the highest rated remote episodes of the popular talk show.
