"Newfoundland is on a roll:" Globe & Mail's cover stories
Last week, The Globe and Mail featured a series of exposes on Newfoundland's brave new future. Gordon Pitts, Atlantic Business Summit panel speaker and Codfathers author, explores the growing employment opportunities and rising real estate prices on "The Rock", as well as interviews Premier Danny Williams in a side story:
"Newfoundland has been in a recession for 400 years,” says Jerry Byrne, president of the St. John's engineering firm D.F. Barnes Ltd. “Five years ago we started coming out of it, and I was born 25 years too early."
Opportunities highlighted include the megaprojects - Long Harbour, Hebron, White Rose and Hibernia South and others - as well as NL's bullish bet on worldwide demand for its natural resources such as oil and nickel.
It's a series of well-detailed articles that are worth a read. The title story is entitled "The Rock's most precious resource," and you may have already guessed that it's human capital Pitts is implying.
