Moncton's Industrial Rail is humming a happy railroad road trip tune tonight. The company has just won a Via Rail contract worth $104 million to refurbish aging passenger cars.
Dick Carpenter, the company's president, said the contract will allow his company to add 185 employees to its current staff of about 30.
Carpenter said his company has been bidding on contracts to fix rail cars all over the world but this is the biggest contract yet.
A leading Rail industry magazine progressiverailroding.com also suggests that while the new contract will spike Moncton's economy with 155 new jobs, the real benifits are about environmental sustainability. The new upgrades should prolong the life of the cars 20 years and reduce emissions by 20%.
