Atlantic Canadians using social networking to find OneMatch

UNB Alum and Saint John, N.B., native Robin Rocca is using Facebook and social networking to find his one match. Unfortunately, Rocca is not searching for a match in the traditional sense; Rocca is searching for a bone marrow match and has launched a Facebook group to spread the word. This plea has struck a chord with Atlantic Canadians who have flocked to the group currently numbering 1300 members.

Rocca, an avid athlete, was diagnosed with leukemia (AML) at the age of 28 just prior to Christmas in 2008. As a result of his genetic sub-type of leukemia he must receive a bone marrow transplant in the very near future.

His siblings both tested as negative matches, so the family has launched a social networking campaign to find a match for Robin. Additionally, the Bone Marrow Transplant clinic in Halifax has begun searching for an unrelated bone marrow donor match through national and international bone marrow registries.

This campaign has received attention from friends, classmates and concerned Atlantic expats, who have registered on Facebook and with OneMatch. One ECC member introduced the OneMatch campaign to their employer and the company has since embraced the cause and encouraged interested in employees in registering.

If you would like to help Robin or the many others in the world waiting for a Bone Marrow match please visit at www.OneMatch.ca. OneMatch is managed by Canadian Blood Services. Just think... "You could be the one match that could save a life.”
