DESCRIPTION:Carleton University's School for Studies in Art and Culture: Music and Atlantic Voices: The Newfoundland and Labrador Choir of Ottawa are pleased to present a special workshop entitled:  &quot;Singing the songs from the Helen Creighton Collection&quot;    Clary Croft\, renowned folklorist\, singer\, songwriter\, biographer\, archivist and author of Helen Creighton: Canada’s First Lady of Folklore will present material from Dr. Creighton’s collection of folk songs from the Maritimes.  By exploring the songs Dr. Creighton collected from various cultural groups on Canada’s east coast\, Clary will illustrate in song how folk music helped to keep traditions alive in an area famous for its folk music heritage.  Clary will offer several examples where participants can sing along and learn to understand how the oral tradition can still be an exciting part of learning new songs.   Workshop Details:   7 - 9:30pm Saturday January 23\, 2010 Venue: Loeb Building\, Tower A\, Carleton Univeristy  Room: A 900 (9th floor) - accesible via the elevators between towers A and B. Just follow the signs!   **FREE ADMISSION**   Parking (free on the weekends) is available on the street and in the lot beside the Loeb Building. The Loeb building is marked LA on the upper left hand side of the campus map: http://www2.carleton.ca/campus/. The nearest parking lots are P1 (nearby and includes an underground lot) and P8 (which is small and may fill up quickly).  This event is being presented in conjunction with the concert &quot;Maritime Memories - Songs &amp; Stories from the Helen Creighton Collection&quot; which will be presented on January 24. Special guest will be Clary Croft: renowned folklorist\, singer\, songwriter\, biographer\, archivist and THE authority on Helen Creighton\, Canada’s First Lady of Folklore.   In addition to the great musical and storey telling line-up (including personal stories from the proud grandson of one of Helen Creighton's prized 'informants')\, Atlantic Voices mascot Tiika and house band the Fumblin' Fingers will be in the house. There will also be a silent auction\, door prizes and....a free lunch!  “Maritime Memories: Songs &amp; Stories from the Helen Creighton Collection”    Sunday January 24\, 2010\, at 3:00 p.m. Centretown United Church (formerly McLeod Stewarton United Church) 507 Bank Street\, Ottawa C  Tickets $15 in advance from members of Atlantic Voices and at the door.
