Stan Rogers Tribute Concert

May 30

Centretown United Church, 507 Bank St, Ottawa, Ontario

3:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Atlantic Voices: the Newfoundland and Labrador Choir of Ottawa present a tribute concert to Canadian folk music legend Stan Rogers on Sunday, May 30 at 3 pm at Centretown United Church, 507 Bank St. in Ottawa.

Had Stan Rogers not died prematurely almost three decades ago, he would be 60 years old now. He continues to speak to Canadians through his words and music, and arrangers from across the country have been inspired to create choral versions of many of his songs.

The two-hour concert includes choral and solo performances of such well-known Stan Rogers songs as Mary Ellen Carter and The Northwest Passage, as well as some less familiar gems from his catalogue (Tiny Fish, Behind the Plow and more).

In the Stan Rogers spirit of breathing new life into musical tradition, the choir also will perform the two winning works from our inaugural, nationwide competition for new choral works with an East Coast flavour. The new works are by Timothy Cooper of New Brunswick and Kurt Walther of Ottawa.

This promises to be one of the most widely appealing concerts yet by the Atlantic Voices choir which, under the direction of Scott Richardson, is attracting a growing audience of fans in Ottawa. For the first time, our concert will be hosted by master of ceremonies Adrian Harewood, co-host of CBC News Ottawa at 5, 5:30 and 6. The house band, the Fumblin’ Fingers, perform a half-hour of traditional east coast music before the concert. A silent auction and free refreshments will be offered following the concert.

Tickets $15 in advance by calling Hannie, 613-722-9240 or at the door. Children attend for free, and everyone is welcome. Visit our website (atlanticvoices.ca) for more information.

To arrange interviews with Scott Richardson or choir members, or for background information, please call media relations officer Peggy Berkowitz, berk@magma.ca or 613-724-6657. Photos and sound clips are available.
