From March 6 to April 10 2010, the Mira Godard Gallery in Toronto will be presenting recent works from renowned Nova Scotia resident and artist Alex Coleville. For those who caught his documentary at the Reel Artists Film Festival, this will be your chance to see how the artist develops his paintings up close.
Alex Colville was born in 1920 in Toronto, Ontario. He studied Fine Arts at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick from 1938 - 1942.
Colville has exhibited extensively across Canada and Internationally including the Tate Gallery, London, England; Beijing Exhibition Centre; Fung Ping Shan Museum, Hong Kong; Teien Museum, Tokyo; Canadian Pavillion at the 1966 Biennale, Venice, Italy; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Kestner Gesellschaft, Hanover and Menschenbilder, Mathildenhoho in Darmstadt, Germany. In 1983 the first internationally touring retrospective of his work was organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario.
Alex Colville’s work is found in many collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the musee National D’Art Moderne, Paris; the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; the Centre National d’Art et de Culture Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne; Kestner Gesellschaft, Hanover, Germany.
