Former 19 year old mayor gets his recount in Paradise N.L.

Being Canada's youngest mayor for 36 hours and losing the title after a recount and name drawing didn't sit well with Kurtis Coombs. After the teenager and his mother made their request to the Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme court, a judge has ordered a second recount of municipal election results for the city of Paradise Newfoundland. Newfoundland and Labrador to benefit from 10Billion Hibernia deal

A memorandum of understand has been reached between the government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Hibernia Consortium to begin an expansion of the Hibernia oil field. This latest expansion could yield an estimated 230 million barrels of crude oil. This is equivalent to $10 Billion in royalties at the top rate of 50 percent. Not only will the province benefit from the Hibernia expansion, but the federal government will as well. Read more

NL has "broken the blockade" to sell electricity to US

As of April 1st, Newfoundland and Labrador's Churchill Falls hydroelectric facility has begun selling a portion of its generating capacity to the United States in what Premier Danny Williams called a "very important deal and a proud moment". The 5 year agreement with Hydro Quebec will net NL up to $80 million per year. Read more

APEC releases interim report on recession impacts in Atlantic Canada

The Atlantic Public Economic Council released an economic report this month summarizing the effects the economic downturn is having on the Atlantic region. Entitled "Early Impact of the Recession in Atlantic Canada – March 2009" , the report indicates that the global economic recession is causing job losses and lower activity in manufacturing and mining industries - both industries with large workforces in eastern Canada.
