Canada’s Maritime provinces are doing all they can to prepare for the demographic challenges and worker shortages in the coming years, and are taking the lead in preparing for the future economy. Atlantic Business Summit Diary 2: Kevin Stolarick and the Future Prosperity of Atlantic Canada

The 2010 Atlantic Business Summit was the site of some open and frank discussion about the employment and economic outlook for the East Coast. At the centre of those discussions was Kevin Stolarick, Research Director of the Martin Prosperity Institute. His opening keynote address, “The Future Prosperity of Atlantic Canada,” was a wide-ranging and candid conversation. Stolarick tackled trends in North American professional and economic development, and pointed to the ways the Atlantic provinces could capitalize on a pervasive new attitude. Read more

Fredericton, Moncton gets the nod in MoneySense's Best Places to Live 2010

MoneySense Magazine published their annual Best Places to Live index, and two east coast communities have made the Top 10.  In their April issue, Fredericton and Moncton, New Brunswick were awarded the 4th and 5th best places to live in Canada, respectively.  Ottawa was crowned the #1 spot while Halifax and Toronto were ranked at #14 and #85 out of 179 communities. Coal mine opens in Cape Breton after 20 year delay

Mining giant Xstrata announced they will be opening the Donkin coal mine 20 years after it was initially dug. Officials announced the decision to Donkin N.S. residents in a packed fire hall earlier this week. The news comes as a relief to local residents who say that jobs are desperately needed in the region. Read more

Cape Breton raises profile in Singapore

A seafood company from Cape Breton has been in Singapore recently as part of a business delegation from the region. Led by Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC), the delegation was in south-east Asia to coincide with the arrival of the yacht Cape Breton Island – Nova Scotia’s Masterpiece which is taking part in the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race fleet. The NB Power Sale: A Critical Study

New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham and Quebec Premier Jean Charest signed a memorandum of understanding that would see NB's beleaguered utility bought for $4.45 billion plus rate changes for power users.
